The Shopify Insights platform has become obsolete in the face of the company’s rapid growth. What was once an acceptable tool for data visualization is now a point of frustration for many of Shopify’s users, with high query latency, inconsistent query results, and query timeouts for larger stores. The problems with the platform lay entirely within the underlying system that handles the satisfaction of user queries and the aggregation of store data. This has demanded a new structure for the Insights platform to operate on, which goes by the name Catwalk. Catwalk is still in the early stages of development at the time of writing, and uses several industry standard technologies as well as frameworks new to Shopify in order to provide a fast, consistent, and scalable solution to the problem at hand.
