ABSTRACT
Users frequently interact with computer systems and make decisions that affect their security. These decisions are especially difficult to make when dealing with complex systems that sacrifice a good user experience in an effort to improve the security of said systems. By utilizing a mental model approach in the development of security interfaces, we developed a method that aimed to help users achieve a more thorough understanding of virtual security and relevant tradeoffs. We investigated doing this through the use of a cause and effect diagram called a Fishbone or Ishikawa diagram that relays security information to users and establishes the relationships between potential risks.
