ABSTRACT
Produced a blueprint in which automations can be built upon which minimize time and manual input required for newspaper production. The blueprint provides a framework for a suite of tools which accelerate or automate processes throughout the creation of a printed newspaper and associated website. A roadmap for future development has been built along with a framework in which to build components which can piece together different stages of work while providing the flexibility to be able to exchange components with manual processes, open-source software, or paywall services. In order to produce a suite of tools which applies broadly to various newspapers, an outline of existing newspaper procedures, automation, and software has been created, and provides insight into the automation developed. As the scale of the project encompassed many systems and risked significant scope creep, the focus of this honours thesis was to single out workflows as stand-alone systems for automation. Particular focus was given to production related tasks, while business requirements have been outlined for future integration. Where possible, components which have suitable available open-source alternatives, or commonly used available software, been treated as services to be bridged in.
