ABSTRACT
The main objective of this honours project was to develop a mobile application which provides users with a better understanding of ingredient lists on food products. Design is the central goal of this project; that is, the main objective is to provide users with a visual representation of ingredient lists with the use of visual aids, HCI design principles and graphic design techniques. This application was developed using a user-centered design. Users can use their phone camera to scan food product barcodes to get information regarding each ingredient in the food product. By improving users’ understanding of ingredients, this application as a secondary goal will also help users identify marketing bias. Users will also have a profile which allows them to enter their health data. The app will then use this health data to create a custom user experience. For example, if the user has celiac disease, the app will give warnings when the user scans the barcode of a food item that has ingredients which may pose a risk to their health. This project was completed over a 4-month period and consisted of the development of the application, as well as usability testing.
