ABSTRACT
Traditional storytelling techniques tend to have unpredictable outcomes on the quality of characters in games, so what in particular makes characters in games memorable and compelling? Using the Character Evaluation Tool created for this study, 45 characters across games are evaluated on what makes them more or less effective as compared to broader research into their audience’s reception. The primary conclusion seems to be that a character must establish a relationship with the player to achieve effectiveness, something that can be accomplished via a variety of methods detailed within.
